We understand that patients not unreasonably may have concerns regarding something known as a ‘toxin’ being injected into their skin. Whilst as medics we are totally convinced of the safety of this product in the right hands, we understand patient apprehension may still remain.

By way of reassurance, patients are offered the following background regarding Botulinum Toxin. Botox (Botulinum Toxin Type A) has been used safely for over 20 years. The cosmetic benefits were fortuitously discovered by the Caruthers physicians in the Vancouver, Canada. These pioneering doctors have continued to use Botox safely since the 1980s in their well established practice.

Botulinum Toxin is a chemical produced by the Clostridium Botulinum bacteria. It is a protein derivative of the toxin, which, when injected into a muscle causes it to become weakened or inactivated. Botox prevents the muscle from functioning by blocking neuromuscular transmission i.e. stops the chemical messages from the nerve to the muscle.

Patients may be aware that increasingly Botox is being used for an ever expanding number of non-cosmetic reasons in UK medical practice: axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive perspiration from the arm pits), migraines, fissure in ano, women’s urinary incontinence, relieving the spasms of cerebral palsy and also in a condition called torticollis.

By using facial muscles repeatedly throughout our lifetime, the skin is creased in areas of greatest use. By reducing movement of muscles in these areas, the skin stops being creased and is allowed to recover causing the lines to soften or even fade away*.

The procedure doesn’t require local anaesthetic and is reported by many patients as ‘pain free’. Some patients do however feel a minor amount of discomfort during the few seconds whilst the product is injected via a very fine needle.

The effects are apparent usually at 7 to 14 days and last for on average 4-6 months in most patients, though there is some variation.

Yes. Some patients may experience some redness and swelling which can be minimized with cover-up makeup.
